Scan Preparation

Proper preparation can help ensure clear and accurate ultrasound imaging. Preparation requirements vary depending on the type of scan, so it is important to follow the instructions provided for your specific examination.

General Preparation

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.
  • Carry your doctor's prescription, previous reports, and relevant medical records if available.
  • Inform the radiologist about any ongoing medications, medical conditions, or previous imaging findings.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete registration and prepare for the examination.

Pregnancy & Fetal Medicine Scans

Most pregnancy ultrasound scans require little or no special preparation. Depending on the gestational age and type of examination, specific instructions may be provided.

For scans such as Early Pregnancy Scan, NT Scan, Anomaly Scan, Growth Scan, Fetal Doppler, and Twin Pregnancy Scan, follow the preparation guidance given at the time of booking.

Scan Preparation

Abdomen Ultrasound

An abdomen ultrasound may require fasting for several hours before the examination, particularly when the gallbladder and upper abdominal organs need to be assessed. Avoid heavy meals before the scan and follow the specific instructions provided.

Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound may require a comfortably full bladder to improve visualization of the pelvic organs. You may be advised to drink water before the examination and avoid emptying your bladder until the scan is completed.

Kidney & Urinary Ultrasound

For kidney or KUB ultrasound, preparation may vary depending on the structures being assessed. In some cases, fasting or a filled bladder may be recommended. Follow the instructions provided before your appointment.

Thyroid, Breast & Soft Tissue Ultrasound

These examinations generally do not require special preparation. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.

Colour Doppler & Obstetric Ultrasound

Preparation for Colour Doppler and obstetric ultrasound depends on the type of examination and the area being assessed. Follow the instructions provided by the clinic when scheduling your scan.

Before Your Scan

If you are unsure about preparation requirements, contact the clinic before your appointment. Do not make assumptions about fasting or bladder preparation, as requirements can vary between different examinations.
